DBMHS Celebrates National Navajo Code Talkers Day

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – The Navajo Nation Division of Behavioral & Mental Health Services (DBMHS) joins the entire United States to celebrate and recognize our Navajo Code Talkers. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared August 14 to be National Navajo Code Talkers Day in honor of their service to the United States and its allies during World War II.

This year, the Navajo Nation takes the initiative further and proclaims August 12-16, 2019 as “Navajo Nation Code Talkers Week.” Also, the nation is hosting a two-day event this Tuesday and Wednesday at the Veterans Memorial Park, to include a parade, recognition speeches, family run/walk, code talker stories, and more.

DBMHS recognizes the Navajo Code Talkers for their contribution toward protecting and advancing our Navajo language by bringing awareness to the relevance and importance of Native American culture to U.S. and around the world. Our native youth have many reasons to be proud of their culture and history and to carry on the tradition of hope and resiliency.

DBMHS also recognizes the Navajo Code Talkers for their strength and for being examples of unity and resilience in overcoming challenges for the younger generations. We are proud to serve all our Navajo warriors who have served in the military through our comprehensive, integrated and culturally appropriate behavioral and mental health services.
