Spiritual Health Thursday – Navajo Nation Suicide Prevention Week

The Division of Behavioral and Mental Health Services (DBMHS) promotes the importance of Spiritual Health in Native families and communities. In partnership with Tsehootsooi Medical Center, Sihasin Night of Hope is being held at The Family Church in Fort Defiance, AZ on Thursday, September 12, from 6 PM – 8 PM. Sihasin Night of Hope focuses on suicide prevention training and life skills training while implementing spiritual teachings.

Spiritual Health is an individualized concept that is measured by the peace and harmony individuals experience in their day to day life. According to the University of New Hampshire, signs of spiritual wellness include:

  • Developing a purpose in life
  • Being able to spend reflective time alone
  • Taking time to reflect on life events and their meanings
  • Recognizing right and wrong and acting accordingly
  • Understanding and articulating what you believe in
  • Caring for others
  • Practicing forgiveness and compassion

DBMHS provides comprehensive behavioral health services to Native Families to foster spiritual health and harmony in communities across the Navajo Nation. Unique to DBMHS services are the traditional cultural services such as ceremonies and sweat, and faith-based services such as pastoral, chapel and counseling services. If you or someone you know might need these services, please contact DBMHS Administration Office at 928-871-6240 or your local DBMHS site.
